Confocal/optical section showing the superficial layer of circular epithelia and penetrating below the surface to expose the complex three-dimensional meshwork of striated muscle. The section was stained to reveal the distribution of actin by phalloidin (red), plasma membranes by wheat germ aggultinin (green), and cell nuclei by Hoechst 33342 (blue). The Olympus DSU confocal imaging system was used.
