The National Institutes of Health will use the money to fund "Grand Opportunities".

The National Institutes of Health will use about $200 million from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 to fund research and research infrastructure "Grand Opportunities" (GO) grants.

The GO grants will support large-scale projects targeting specific research goals. Applicants must show that their projects will benefit from two years of significant funding. The agency says that applicants should not expect funding beyond the two-year timeline.

The NIH wants applications that address specific research needs or that propose a unique infrastructure or resource that will help future research.

The size of each award will vary, but the NIH expects to consider only applications with annual budgets over $500,000.

Applications must be submitted by May 27, 2009. The anticipated start date is September 30, 2009.
