Jorge Cham and his partners at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) have released a trailer for the live-action Piled Higher and Deeper: The Movie, also known as The Ph.D. Movie.
The Ph.D. Movie follows the lives of four graduate students—Cecilia, Mike, Tajel, and the Nameless Grad Student—in their pursuit of happiness in the frustrating and often absurd world of academic research. And in their spare time, when they find any, these lab rats attempt to have a life outside the lab.
The movie is based on the popular Piled Higher and Deeper online comic strip created by Cham. Instead of working within the uncertain world of large Hollywood production companies, Cham worked with the CalTech theater and Ph.D. communities to produce the movie.
The film was directed by Vahe Gabuchian who has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from CalTech and produced by Meg Rosenburg who has a Ph.D. in Geological and Planetary Sciences also from CalTech. The Ph.D. Movie stars Raj Katti as The Nameless Grad Student, Alexandra Lockwood as Cecilia, Evans Boney as Mike Slackenerny, and Crystal Dil worth as Tajel. The movie was filmed earlier this year over 17 days on location at the CalTech campus.
Screenings will begin next fall at campus around the world with screenings tentatively scheduled for the University of Texas, the University of Illinois, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, Purdue University, the University of Sherbrooke, Syracuse University, Rutgers University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University.
Reporter Priya Sabu wrote about the filming of the movie in the April 2011 article "Ph.D. Comics goes to Hollywood ."
