Who is hiding in your gut?

The largest ever human gut microbiome metagenomics study has revealed some intriguing insights into who exactly is living in our guts. An international team of scientists led by researchers at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI; Hinxton, UK) has created a catalog of 204,938 nonredundant genomes from the human gut microbiome. The new resource could have far-reaching implications for research into the influence of the gut on human health. It also revealed that we have a surprising lack of knowledge as to what is living in our gut – over 70% of the species have never been grown in the lab....
