The Translation Research Emphasis | BenchTalk, Episode 14

In his 2014 budget request, President Obama requested a 16% increase for the National Center for Advancing Translational Research, but only a 1.5% increase for the NIH overall. So why the emphasis on translation research?

We speak with pharmacology researcher Sean Ekins, GlaxoSmithKline vice president Pearl Huang, and NCATS director Chris Austin why the time for translation research is now and about the challenges that remain.

Also, in our science round table with science writers Sarah C.P. Williams and Ashley Yeager, we discuss what the Glowing Plant Kickstarter project means for the future of science funding and synthetic biology.

	Sean Ekins Interview In 2011, Ekins published a paper that highlighted the potential of in silico drug repurposing efforts. Earlier this year, Ekins and colleagues published a paper on the challenges of obtaining chemical structures from the NIH drug repurposing program. Chris Austin Interview In September 2012, Austin was appointed the first permanent director of NCATS. In May 2012, NCATS launched the "Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules" program. Science Rountable Notes In April 2013, Williams wrote about a group of researchers at the Scripps Research Institute who found an effective treatment for neurodegenerative prion disease by screening a library of existing drugs. Also in April 2013, Yeager wrote about Duke University researchers that developed a computer algorithm that can map drug-like chemical compounds. In May 2013, Yeager wrote about a crowd-funded project to create glowing plants.
