when it was noted that people who had previously recovered from the illness could nurse the sick without getting another bout of the disease. Immunological research has, of course, come a long way since then, and we now have a deeper understanding of the many roles the immune system plays in health and disease. Together, innate and adaptive immune responses can protect us from a whole host of insults, from cuts and bruises to infectious diseases and invasive cancer cells.
