The winner | BioTechniques’ 40th anniversary image competition

We are very pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s image competition is Monstrous osteoclasts, submitted by Sayali Chandekar!

Monstrous osteoclasts

Sayali Chandekar (Savitribai Phule Pune University, India)

These are bone-eating giant multinucleated osteoclasts generated in vitro from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The image was taken in 2022 and was taken on a Nikon confocal microscope. The osteoclasts are stained for Phalloidin by Rhodamine dye (red) and the nuclei are stained by DAPI (purple).

We received numerous submissions for our image competition in honor of BioTechniques’ 40th anniversary. These submissions were then sent to our judges for scoring, considering scientific impact, image quality and ‘wow’ factor. The fantastic images you see below are the judge-selected Top 10 that were open to public vote.

Thank you to all of our entrants!
