A cell with no lipids: what are the odds?

Cheryl Kerfeld, Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University (MSU) and in two divisions of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley, CA, USA), discusses her presentation at ASCB 2019 (7-11 December 2019, Washington, MD, USA) about bacterial microcompartments. She also takes us through her work on the Proteo Cell Project, an effort to create the first cell without any lipids present. What will the challenges of creating this cell be and how will it advance cell biology?
