The importance of metabolic monitoring in cell culture

Written by Beatrice Bowlby (Digital Editor)

Core to any cell culture’s success is the ability to monitor cell growth and culture progression, especially as cell models become more complex and three dimensional. One way to do this is by tracking cellular metabolism, which provides information about cell activation, differentiation and disease progression.

Traditionally, researchers have used a manual periodic sampling method to monitor metabolism; however, this is a laborious process. Now, researchers can use continuous monitoring methods to glean more information from their cell cultures without having to sample the cultures at regular intervals.
